Ratan Tata backs Manmohan Singh, urges reforms
Tata Group chairman Ratan Tata [photo] hit out at members of the Opposition and came out in support of Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday.
The head of the $-100bn conglomerate urged the prime minister to restore government credibility, as the country battles rising inflation, poor investor confidence and political paralysis.
"Now is the moment in time our Prime Minister must break convention, restore government credibility, place the country on a growth path once again by implementing promised reforms, removing roadblocks to growth and controlling crony capitalism," Tata said on his Twitter page.
Tata slammed the Opposition, media and "some members of ruling party", saying it is "grossly misdirected" to single out the Prime Minister and blame him for the current economic crisis in the country.
Off late, Manmohan Singh has been at the receiving end of severe criticism - from citizens, politicians and even international media.
Last week, the Time magazine termed Singh an "underachiever" and criticized him for not acting decisively when the economy is slowing. (Click here for more.)
Backing Singh, Tata said: "It is sad and unfortunate that in the past few months the Opposition, the media, some private citizens and even some members of the ruling party have mercilessly spoken and written about our Prime Minister - a person who was the architect of the '91 reforms, which brought economic prosperity and international recognition to our country."
Tata tweeted, saying he was "depressed to see the attacks on India" and "felt obliged to express my feelings".
India's economic growth slumped to nine-year low of 5.3 percent in the quarter ended March 31, 2012. The gross domestic product (GDP) growth fell to 6.5 percent in 2011-12 as compared to 8.4 percent in the previous year.
